In our 16 year web development history, we have been approached by dozens of website owners for help with recovering their lost domain names.

The scenario usually goes like this: a business owner hires someone to create a website for their company and then after a few years, the person (or company) who created the website disappears for whatever reason (out of business; moved out of the area; got a real job; etc.).

Then unknowingly, the domain name registration expires and is automatically, electronically gobbled up by opportunistic domain squatters who then register the expired domain in hopes that the original owner will be highly motivated to purchase the domain name at a much higher asking price.

While we've been able to help recover expired domain names when they're still in the registrar's mandatory 60 to 90 day hold period (before they're released back to the public registration pool), expired domains can usually be recovered from the registrar for fees of $80 to $200.

In cases where the hold period has expired, the new owner of the domain (squatter) has the original owner at their mercy. Most often, squatters might ask for $200 to $2000.

Here's the most astounding real life example that we have witnessed to date...

A few years before we moved Flash Avenue to the Olde Tollgate Village, the community of Olde Tollgate Village business owners had a website that was created by a local professional website development company (to remain unnamed). The website resided on "tollgatevillage.com."

Years later, while our community's business owners were looking into details of our shared leasing expenses, we learned that there were ongoing domain registration and website hosting charges for this website... which no longer existed.

After researching the domain registration, we discovered that tollgatevillage.com was no longer registered to the community and was posted "for sale." We contacted the new home of tollgatevillage.com (buydomains.com: a domain name broker) to inquire the asking price... we were told, "the owner of the domain name is asking $23,000.00"

Make sure that you know where your domain name is registered and that you have access to the registration.
